Petroleum Goodies: Oil-Base Mud

Oil-Base Mud: An emulsion whose continuous phase is oil. Previously, the words described an oil mud made up of lower than about 5 vol.% water. This particular description, at that time, distinguished mud with lower than 5 vol.% water from invert-emulsion oil muds, that had greater than 5 vol.% water.

Nowadays, this variation is just not practical since most industrial oil muds can be created with more or lower than 5 vol.% water by using fundamentally the similar kinds of products. Commonly used in drilling.

P-wave: An elastic body wave or sound wave where particles oscillate in the path the wave develops. P-waves are the waves evaluated in traditional seismic data.

P-waves incident on an interface at other than regular incidence can generate reflected and transmitted S-waves, then simply referred to as converted waves. Generally found in geophysics.

Velocity Survey: Measurements which is used to calculate average velocity versus depth, for example from an acoustic log or check-shot survey. Getting a velocity survey is generally known as “shooting a well”. Commonly used in geophysics.
